Kitchen Ergonomics

Bend. Twist. Reach. Duck. If preparing a meal in your kitchen feels more like an aerobics class and leaves you with an aching back at the end of the day, it’s high time that you reconsider your kitchen layout. Kitchen ergonomics is all about creating a well-designed kitchen layout to suit your needs, and not the other way around.

COUNTERTOPS
Much cooking time is often spent on food preparation, may it be chopping onions and vegetables, peeling potatoes or dicing meat. Therefore, choosing a countertop at the right height is important. You do not want to have to stoop too low or stand on your toes to carry out the tasks.

However, choosing one that suits your height may not necessarily be suitable for the rest of your family. Worry not; there are countertops nowadays that come in staggered heights to accommodate different needs. Alternatively have your main countertop at one height, and your kitchen island higher or lower.

If you do not have the luxury of investing in a new countertop, there are ways to adapt the counter to suit your needs:
* For the vertically challenged, always have a high stool around the kitchen to hop on for some added height.
* For those with too-low countertops, add a piece of wood on the countertop to give it some elevation.

TIP: A good rule to consider when choosing the appropriate counter height is to go for one that is approximately the height of your elbow.
