1. Given that kitchen cabinets take up a lot of space, make use of its prominence to add a splash of colour to the area. Better yet, remove the cabinet doors to expose brightly-painted interior for an airy, open look.

2. If you find fully-coloured cabinetry too overwhelming, opt instead for white kitchen furniture with a glazed or polished finish. This helps reflect existing lights to create a visual kaleidoscope of colours without overpowering the kitchen.

3. While it may still seem taboo to use black furniture in the home, this stolid tone is actually great as backdrops to let other colours pop. For instance, a dining table will contrast beautifully with bright table mats or table runners; or showcase your exquisite china tableware.

4. A new countertop can change the entire look of a kitchen. Find a bold design for the entire kitchen, or select one only for the island. New composite materials like recycled glass offers flecks of vibrant colour; whereas timeless classics like granite work just as well.
