Open-Plan Layouts

Make the most of open-plan layouts to create attractive, workable living spaces.

The All-In-One
Studio apartments are all about open-layouts. Overall cohesion of colour schemes and design style is important to avoid a haphazard look. Instead, focus on simple embellishments that draw the eye to certain areas of the room without breaking fluidity of the space as a whole.

Tip: Work out a convenient traffic flow throughout the room to avoid inconveniences like having to detour around armchairs to get to the kitchen.

Living + Dining
Incorporating the dining area into the living room provides for extra seating during small get-togethers or parties. To set up a visual break within the two areas, a sofa placed across the open-plan space will help differentiate activity zones without destroying the sensation of roominess.

Tip: Well-placed contemporary area rugs are useful for distinguishing the areas in the room - have a soft rug by the couches to anchor the seating arrangement or under a dining table to mark out the eating area.

Living + Study
Incorporate a small study area at a corner so as not to take centre stage in the living room. Ensure adequate lighting by way of table or stand lamps which can be switched off when not required.

Tip: Simple wall shelves provide storage for work materials without taking up valuable floor space.

Kitchen + Dining
An un-segmented dining and kitchen area will infuse a homey, comfy feel to the house, where meals are prepared with the family or kids hanging about and food is served hot from the stove.
