How To Mix & Match Patterns

Here’s a smart guide to show you how to match patterns beautifully.

Although one well-chosen pattern can make a significant design statement, an interplay of patterns can produce an effect that is even more striking. Here are some of the most effective techniques to mix and match patterns:

Begin with a print you love
Select a large-scale print with several colours, so you’ll have many options for mixing and matching other patterns. Let this “signature print” dominate in the room.

Find a common colour theme
This is one of the best ways to tie two or more patterns together. If you are working with several prints in the same room, start by selecting the predominant pattern, which is the one with largest scale or boldest colour.

Consider the scale of your pattern
In general, strong patterns work best when given top billing. A large-scale floral will work well with a medium-scale geometric pattern and a mini-print. Small-scale patterns can add punch to a room without vying for attention from the dominant patterns.

Try to let one colour from your signature print dominate throughout
Use the dominant colour in the fabric chosen for the largest areas in the room, like the wall or ceiling and the second-brightest shade for large, upholstered pieces.

Introduce balance with neutrals
Balance patterns with areas of solid colour or neutrals and use just a few simple patterns paired with one or two solid fabrics.

Give patterns some space
You don’t have to use a print and pattern in every corner of the room. For example, hang simple white roman shades on a wall covered in a bold wallpaper and put your patterned curtains on another wall that’s painted white.

Keep furniture simple
If the room already has a lot going on in the way of colour and pattern, keep furniture simple and clean lined. White always pops against a colourful backdrop, so it’s a good way to go in boldly-patterned rooms.
