Tangerine, the shade of orange that resembles the Mandarin variety of the citrus fruit, is a colour that connotes joy, youthfulness, vibrancy and energy. Tangerines can produce wondrous results to a room, just like the secondary color it derives from - orange.

Colour experts recommend orange for a room as it symbolizes balance, warmth and enthusiasm. This probably explains why personality tests indicate that individuals who love orange are those who are friendly and sociable. On top of this, orange is also a colour that stimulates the appetite, and is best adorned in the kitchen or dining area.

Be wary of overwhelming the room with this shade as tangerine is a bold colour. Avoid using tangerine for big pieces of furniture such as sofas. Instead, treat it delicately and playfully, such as with small accessories and furniture. Should you opt for tangerine as your wall color, ensure that other items in the room should be simple in colour and uncluttered.

Tangerine can also provide the much needed jolt of life for old furniture like upholstery. Squeeze your creative juices and try pairing this citrus hue with materials such as silk, cotton, bamboo and leather for throw pillows, lamps, vases, slipcovers and other furniture items.

How to Use Tangerine
* A useful guide in choosing hues to complement colours is to use a colour wheel. The best colour to complement tangerine is blue, the colour opposite it on the colour wheel. Colours adjacent to tangerine – red and orange - are also suitable to make it pleasing for your eyes upon entering the room.

* Tangerine alone also works, by using various shades of tangerine across the room to avoid overwhelming the senses with its intensity. Off-white coupled with varying shades of tangerine is also perfect to pull off this combination tastefully.

* Recent developments for tangerine-coloured furniture include the usage of gray and cream, which ups the ante for a sophisticated look.

* Pair tangerine with nature-inspired hues such as reds, browns and olive green to exacerbate a nature-inspired ambience.
