Open and airy blues are set to dominate the colour palettes this year, as this colour speaks of serenity and peace, and positivity and vitality. Stepping into the second decade of the new millennium, a fresh burst of renewed optimism and energy is always welcome.
From a psychological viewpoint, the pure and almost translucent quality of soft, airy blues evoke in many a sense of calmness. It is known to help combat mental exhaustion and stress, and thus makes for good wall colours in the study. Blues are also thought to be able to enhance communication and promote confidence.
Nevertheless, this colour is equally desirable in designing and decor terms. Its soft and light feel makes it perfect as wall colours for almost any room in the house, from the kitchen to the bedroom.
Its neutrality complements well other contemporary textures like steel, leather or glass. Imagine having a cool, icy blue glass-tiled backsplash in your kitchen - it would bring an immediate burst of colour to the room.
Airy blues can also take to stronger colour tones well. Its lightness opens up the room and keeps it from feeling cluttered. Deep burgundy and pewter tones will reflect beautifully off the light blue shade; whilst more muted plums and teals lend a nature-inspired feel to the room.
If you would rather not commit your walls to the blue colour, try instead to incorporate it into your furniture or use them as colour accents. The pairing of soft blues and pale greens can make quite a stunning combination. Have them as throw pillows on the sofa, or use these colours alternatively as sheer window treatments.
TIP: As beautiful as the colour is, never commit the whole room to just one colour. Balance out this light shade with deeper colours like dark blues and browns.
